Chunk or Chuck?

Postby assateague » Tue Mar 26, 2013 11:47 am

Flightstopper's response in another thread got me thinking (slow day). Around here, we use them both, but not interchangeably. It seems to have to do with intent. I'll often say "chuck me that board", or "chuck me that remote". That seems to be when the other person actually wants what you're throwing to them. If you say "chunk", it's usually a sign that you're trying to do some damage. "There's a snake- chunk a rock at it", or "that pit bull was eyeballing me, so I chunked a hammer at it". Not sure if this is universal, or just here. Never would I say "I was trying to kill a rat, so I chucked a stick at it". Nope.

Never heard chunk used like that. If its a friendly throw I've always heard "toss" around here. If its an aggravated throw then its a "chuck".

Only use chuck on the west coast I guess. Unless it goes like this "see that chunk in the stripper boots eyeballing you?"

Chunk must be a southern thing bc I've never used or heard anyone use "chuck" I did go to school my entire life growing up with a guy named Chuck. He was kind of an asshole. However id never ask someone to chunk something to me. I'd use "toss" or "hey throw me that"

Everybody says chunk down here but I guess I should've added that its mainly pertaining to throwing rocks for some reason.

Never heard a trunk called a truck. Now we call a pickup a truck where as other people such as DKC get offended saying that term is reserved for heavy duty trucks and 18 wheelers.

You wanna chuck me a chunk of that wood for the fire?

Chuck= action
Chunk= material things.

Google always has an answer, though I'm not always sure it's the right answer.

In casual conversation, you may get by with saying “Chuck [throw] me that monkey wrench, will you?” But you will mark yourself as illiterate beyond mere casualness by saying instead “Chunk me that wrench.” This is a fairly common substitution in some dialects of American English.

Some women I've done a lot of design work with were always misusing "flush." In regards to an idea that needed work they'd say "we need to flush it out." When I corrected them and told them the proper term was to "flesh it out," they said "Ew, that's gross sounding! We like 'flush' better."
