There's a scale on your square to figure this stuff out as well. The double division thing is the way I was taught and had to take a test on way back in high school. Keep in mind that they had JUST INVENTED the digital calculator and watch at that time.
There IS a formula written down somewhere in my carpenter book. It's pretty much what you did in your head correctly AT. Somehow Jehler got it wrong. He was only off by 1/16th an inch on a small set of stairs. Probably wouldn't get noticed.![]()
